The First Ocean Festival
SunPost News 1976. Reporter Fred Swegles did a story on a new lifeguard competition called The Orange County Games which was renamed to “San Clemente Ocean Festival”. Larry Moore and Barney Voorhees are diving for a beach flag. This was taken just south of HQ with the old Resort Motel in the background. That motel was burned down by the volunteer fire department (including a few lifeguards). It burned for three days. Its now a grassy park with benches overlooking the pier bowl. The Ocean Festival has been held every year since and is world known as the “The Greatest Show On Surf”.
